THURSDAY

It feels premature to think about end of year deals, but I’ve already seen several advertised on Craig’s List this week. While moving during the winter might sound like an awful experience, on the contrary, it is an option you should really consider.

I moved on a cold rainy day in December last year. Yes, the weather was terrible, but I wasn’t competing for the freight elevator like you experience during peak moving months (May through September). Another advantage to moving during winter, is that managed buildings and desperate landlords are more willing to compromise with you on price. Take advantage of slow sales periods to score some great deals — I’ve captured one below that shouldn’t be missed.

living room
$2950 / 2br – Gorgeous Two Bedroom Victorian Bay-front Townhouse (117 11th St. NE)

What makes it great: Available December ninth, this old-school rowhouse is perfectly cozy. No square footage listed, but the photos make it seem like a roomy two bedroom.

Why you should keep searching: Row houses offer a lot of space, but all that room requires more heat and electricity. There’s no mention of what the utility costs are, so expect them to run high compared to your apartment.

Fireplace
$2975 / 2br – Beautiful Large Dupont Two Bedroom Apartment (1734 T St. NW)
Why you’ll love it: A fireplace will always spruce up a room. The fireplace here looks to be original to the building, adding instant charm. You can’t beat this two bedroom’s location, a short walk from 14th & U.

Why it might not work: If you’re into cooking, I’d keep looking (see what I did there?). The kitchen in this place isn’t great.

HStreet$1325 / 1br – Newly-Renovated True 1 BR (plus LR/Den) in the Heart of H Street!

What caught my eye: I love the renovations made to this H Street house. The exterior color is so happy and welcoming, and the interior looks bright and clean. Given that this house has a den, with a roommate you could really save on rent by living here.

What concerns me: The available date is November 15, so I imagine the landlord is looking to fill it fast. If you want this place, you’ll need to be able to move immediately.

TheCrescent
$2250 / 1br – 560ft2 – Charming one bedroom apartment in historic building in Adams Morgan!
Why you’ll love it: As a former resident of California Street, I promise you’ll enjoy living here. The Crescent is a gorgeous, gated building that always caught my eye on walks home from work. The location can’t be beat — you’re a walk away from exciting 18th Street, yet far enough for some peace and quiet. Another perk to this place is the lack of utility payments, the tenant only pays for electricity.

Why you should think twice: When I lived on this street, I found grocery shopping  a challenging endeavor. Yes, you are within walking distance of multiple options, but none are super convenient when you have a lot of bags. Should you move here buy a grocery cart!

kitchen
$2799 / 2br – Rent now, don’t pay rent until January 1. BOOM! (Adams Morgan)
What makes this place great:
Here’s that end of year deal I mentioned earlier. This historic building (Embassy Towers) is in the process of renovating, so they’re cutting move-in specials for people willing to live here in before all the work is done. If the available units look anything like the sample images, living in the midst of a construction site is well worth it.

Why you should keep looking: The move-in specials are limited to “select units,” so ask to see the specific unit you’d be getting before you sign, in case they are discounted for a reason other than nearby renovations.

Until next week,
Cara
