Off the Market: BYOM?

Does the acronym BYOM, make you run? BYOM or “Bring Your Own Mattress” is a feature in some DC apartments. What this means is that there is a foldout bed or a murphy bed. During the day you can physically hide your bed by folding it up into the wall. For some people this is a dream come true. Forget ever having to make your bed. For some this is a nonstarter. So what is the appeal? The appeal is that you can survive in an extremely small, often cool place without feeling cramped. For me, there is something about folding up my sheets into a wall that makes me squirm. However for these cool places, I may reconsider:

Priced at $1600 and located in the heart of Foggy Bottom, this studio is an easy walk to Georgetown and Dupont. It has parquet floors, built-in bookcases, and track lighting in the kitchen. The bathroom has been updated and it very cute. The view out of the window is wooded and private. The mirrored wall also gives the illusion of additional space. On the right you see what looks like a giant closet. That would be where your bed would fold out. A murphy bed works in this layout because you wouldn’t want your bed that close to an open kitchen. However, the downside is that you can’t really decorate in the space where your bed would fold out, unless you wanted to move it every night.

There is no arguing that this studio is flashy. The monochromic color palette and modern decor makes it ultra cool. Priced at $1700 and located a little bit north of Dupont Circle, this studio gets an A on location. Based on the pictures, its hard to determine layout but I am thinking that the bed folds out in the middle of the living space. Again a murphy bed works in this layout because you wouldn’t want your bed that close to an open kitchen. However, the downside is that you can’t really decorate in the space where your bed would fold out, unless you wanted to move it every night.  Be sure to check out the rest of the pictures. The dining area and bathroom are to die for.
