While searching for an apartment of my own, I have started profiling buildings I tour. I want to extend this idea to buildings that I have visited or have some kind of inside scoop on. After living in the DC for a few years, I have visited several apartments and had several conversations with friends about their apartments. It’s time to shed a little light on a building you have probably seen all over Craigslist, The Cleveland House. I have good memories of the Cleveland house because I have had two groups of friends call it home. However, their time there was short lived. Here is what I know:
What makes it great: Many of these units are spacious. Three of my girlfriends made a two bedroom layout work for three. They converted the dining room into a decent bedroom. The location is great. Woodley Park is a great option for recent DC transplants looking to ease into city life. It has a little bit of a suburban feel but is still accessible. There are nice amenities like a rooftop and a gym. All your utilities are included, making it super easy to split rent and just pay in general.
Why you should think twice: Ready for a horror story? The building changed management companies in the middle of my two friend’s lease. This wasn’t a big deal until they got their lease renewal agreement. There rent increased over $1000! With little apology, my friends were ushered out and left to scramble for a new place. Which leads to my next point, I think these apartments are overpriced. I believe you can find much more interesting spaces for less, in a hipper part of town.
Overall I think the Cleveland House is a pretty transient place. It served a purpose for my friends and now they are happier elsewhere. Think the pros outweigh the cons? You be the judge. Here is studio available for $1605 a month.
