August is slow month in D.C. with Congress out on recess and plenty of people on vacation, the city feels dead. Same can be said for the rental market. With not a lot of inventory to choose from, today’s theme is quality over quantity. Each listing offers something truly unique.
The Shelby is a beautiful building, which rarely opens up. I’ve actually found that to be true with a lot of Borger Management properties, they must be great to live in. This particular building has a boutique vibe with gorgeous finishes (like the exposed brick wall pictured above).
One inconvenience: The washer/dryer is in the kitchen, right next to your sink. This is very common in newer buildings, and totally beats lugging your laundry to a creepy basement with coin operated machines. Just clean the counters before folding!
$3000 / 2br – 2500ft2 – Gorgeous row house with unparalleled finishings in Columbia Heights (1343 Kenyon Street)
This house is a Pinterest lover’s dream. I had a hard time narrowing down which photo to feature. The kitchen’s blue backsplash is a refreshing change from the white subway tile you see so much of. The patio looks perfect for hosting summer soirees.
Why it may not work: If you’re looking for a place to call your own, this isn’t for you. One of the three bedrooms is already taken, and the current tenant is looking for two other roommates. Living in a “group house” seems like a D.C. resident rite of passage. They say making friends as an adult is hard, going the random housemates route is a perfect solution.
$3050 / 2br – 1000ft2 – Two Bedroom One Bath In West End In Pet Friendly Building (Washington)
West End is such a classic downtown neighborhood, perfect in my mind for a NYC-transplant. Plenty of restaurants and swanky gyms are in this area including an Equinox and Soul Cycle within walking distance of each other. Starting at GW this fall? Its proximity to campus is perfect for students. With gorgeous features like a wood fireplace and a private balcony, I see this getting swept up fast.
Why you should think twice: The kitchen could use an upgrade.
$2900 / 2br – 955ft2 – Stunning Corner Unit At the Historic Embassy! (Washington)
This Mount Pleasant condo is filled with charm. You get wainscoting in the main room and multiple walk-in closets. Clearly the owner put a lot of work into making this unit unique.
What I don’t love: I wish the apartment was painted a more neutral palette, but perhaps the landlord will let you to change it.
Until next week,
Cara
