We Are Buying

I rarely get personal on here because I think this is a place readers come to see pretty houses, not to hear about my life. However, I have personal news to share. I have been silent these last couple of months because my husband, Matt and I have been engaged in our own home search. I am happy to announce that we have found a place. You will probably be surprised to hear that it is not in a historic neighborhood and it’s not an old, charming home. In fact, it is new construction in Navy Yard.

For the last year, we have called Navy Yard home. Having been ever loyal to the Northwest quadrant since arriving to DC, the transition was tough but Matt was emphatic that this would be a neighborhood I would grow to love. He was right. What Navy Yard lacks in charm it makes up for in community, convenience, and spectacular views. However, I was still uncertain if this was the neighborhood I wanted to call home for the next three to five years.

Over the last few months, Matt and I have been exploring homes all around DC and Virginia. We left every open house discouraged. Knowing the real estate market here, I knew what it was going to take to land one of these houses and to be honest, the emotional roller coaster wasn’t worth it. I left every home thinking about escalation clauses, not the joy of finding a new home. Furthermore, Matt is 6’4″ and every home we stepped into pre-1950s was laughable for man of his size. I truly felt like we were destined to rent forever.

Then came The Avidian. I had signed up for their emails out of curiosity because I have watched the building go up. We were unable to go to the opening weekend party because we were out of town. However, some friends in the neighborhood went and tipped us off that the prices were right and that they were planning on moving forward with a unit. From there the whole process went very quickly, but I can confidently say it was far less stressful than it could have been. We picked our floor plan, picked our finishes, and signed a contract. Simple as that. We are now under our 15 day contingency period so, knock on wood, anything could happen. However, I am feeling confident.

I’m sure you have a lot of question. Why Navy Yard? Why a condo? Why new construction? Answers to those questions to come.
